The Green Fairy Cabaret @ The Kimmel Center

I have a slight obsession with all things Parisian inspired and this show just reminded me of a Moulin Rouge-esque production so of course I had to get my tickets right away.  Read all about it right here and become absorbed in 1900's Paris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look up! Philadelphia School of Circus Arts transforms the region’s skyline into a dazzling flight back to 1900s Paris.  Fly with the “Green Fairy” as she presents aerial and acrobatic feats, plus comedy, juggling and spectacular physical skills.

In the early 1900s, Paris sparkled with five permanent circuses. Night after night, artists watched the shows and mingled after hours with the jugglers, saltimbanques, clowns, harlequins and acrobats who virtually embodied artistic risk.  Painters, sculptors and circus artists challenged the status quo by redefining the limits of human possibility. The popular – and controversial – drink absinthe (nicknamed the Green Fairy) was rumored to push these limits even further.   The region’s top circus artists will take you on a trip to this creative and socially volatile period with a dazzling and comical performance with fabric (tissu), aerial ladder, trapeze and acrobatics, all performed overhead at Philadelphia’s most breathtaking rooftop spaces, the Kimmel Center’s Hamilton Garden.

The daytime show is family-friendly for children of all ages.  The nightly show has its own special rewards, including a special “Green Fairy Absinthe Bar.

Not so Corny Popcorn Bar

Scarlet Occasions recently spent the weekend in Chicago and while there we munched on delicious caramel popcorn from a Nuts On Clark  stand and that inspired today's blog post.
There are so many ways out to personalize your wedding or even your shower and having a popcorn bar is just another really cute way to do just that.  If done correctly a popcorn bar has the potential to be  a classy, sophisticated, and really yummy treat for all of your guests to enjoy!  Here are a few ideas of how popcorn bars have been displayed at weddings:

These cute bags can be purchased here & the stickers can be purchased here

Vases that would work perfectly for this can be purchased here

Giving a brief description of the flavors and putting it in a frame makes adds a formal flare.

Every popcorn bar needs scooper's and they can be purchased here.  They are very reasonable and they come in every color to fit your wedding scheme.

Incorporate your wedding colors by adding a touch of color to the vase.

To class up your popcorn bar have your guests fill up champagne flutes instead of paper bags and you can purchase them here and even personalize them.

Add toppings, syrups, and spices for guests to add to their popcorn creation.

Now for the best part -Places to order bulk popcorn:

How to be the Best Best Man EVER!

Being asked to be the best man is quite a big deal and with that honor comes quite a bit of responsibility.  It is not just about bachelor parties and drinking and that is why the best men in the world have to pay attention.

There is actually a website strictly dedicated to the men in weddings - grooms and attendants can find useful information here:

Tips for the speech.

There's pressure right from the start especially with the speech.  You have to do it right and not mess up their big day, but it's not as hard as it looks. Writing a great toast requires a little creativity, a little patience, some hard work, and some ingenuity.  Along with the pressure of the big speech a best man must take care of the following according to wednet.com:

  • To see that the groom makes it successfully to the alter
  • To assist in any or unforeseen reception problems
  • To ensure that the groom maintains enough to not make a fool of himself
  • To ensure that HE maintains enough to not make a fool of himself
  • Arrange for the bachelors dinner and, or party
  • Select a gift for the groom
  • Act as a liaison for the groom’s friends and family
Before Leaving to the Wedding Ceremony
  • Help the groom dress
  • Insure that the car is packed for the honeymoon
  • Travel Tickets, Passport, ID, etc is the couple is leaving right after the wedding.
  • Reception Speech
  • Hold on to the Money/ Travelers Checks if any are needed for remaining vendor bills.
  • Handkerchief
  • Any gifts or acknowledgments
Before Walking Down the Aisle and After the Ceremony
  • Ensure that the groom uses the restroom
  • Groom's -shoes are tied
  • Pant's fly is up
  • Face and hair are in order
  • If vows are written, that they are on him
  • Nothing is between his teeth
  • Fear and second thoughts are calmed and put to rest
  • Wedding ring is with the Best Man
  • Groom signs the Marriage license
  • Groom has the check for on hand for the clergy fee
During and After the Reception
Best man may be asked to pay the vendors on your behalf and to help ensure that the reception facility or restaurant is left in good order. Whatever arrangements you make, be sure that you review them with your Best Man at least a couple of days before the wedding date.
  • Musicians or DJ setup
  • Speech to the groom and bride
  • Offer the first toast
  • Dance with the bride and her attendants
The Best Man’s Panic Kit for the Groom
Here are some helpful items that the Best Man should have with him. If you are super pragmatic, you may want to purchase these items in advance and give to them to your Best Man for all those unforeseen moments to come. Throw them in a zip up bag and have them handy.
  • Aspirin, Tylenol
  • Antacid
  • Hair comb or brush
  • Black magic marker
  • Small towel or papertowels
  • Hair gel or hairspray
  • Extra toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Mouthwash
In conclusion, the key is to find a Best Man who will help make your wedding day especially easy and trouble free. Select a friend who is resourceful, energetic, and diplomatic. A friend with those skills can find solutions to problems without offending or creating new ones.

David Tutera Love Time

I have been stalking this man and the events he creates for a few years now.  Everything he touches is beautiful in my eyes and his personality just melts my heart.  When he plans an event he goes to town.  He tears the boundaries of social norms for a wedding down and replaces them with creative and inspiring pieces of art.  He turns a plain Jane wedding reception into an experience that no guest will forget.  He stays away from the mundane and adds spice to everything and that truly is how I like to mold the events I plan.  I like to go that extra step and  I strive to make the event stand out and personalize it to the client.

When a guest leaves an event they memories they hold are the sights, sounds, and smells that they encountered.  The room itself does not have to be extraordinary but what that room contains will make all the difference.  These little details can be done on a budget too and that is what makes it so much more fun.  You don't have to have a "platinum wedding" to make your event stand out and be loud and proud.

Here are some ideas from the man himself:

When your guests arrive at your reception, they should be wowed. Of course you want them to enjoy every part of your wedding… but the reception is where they’ll dine and spend most of their time, so this is where you should really aim to impress. There are many elements that must come together beautifully—almost magically—to elicit those oohs and ahhs from your guests… and your tables and table accessories are a huge piece of the puzzle.

Start with your table shapes. I’m all about mixing them up! A room filled with all round tables topped with all the same centerpieces is cookie-cutter and boring.

Instead, try a combination of long and round tables with at least two different floral designs to match. Or position two eight-foot tables end to end so guests face each other at dinner—they’ll feel like they’re at a royal banquet! Another fabulous concept (my favorite!) is to set tables in an X shape, using one square table as the center of the formation and positioning one or two double-long tables at each of its four sides. If your venue is large enough, you could even create two X’s in your room and fill the spaces in between with round tables. This set-up not only encourages mingling, it also makes an incredible visual statement!
Your centerpieces and floral designs should also vary from table to table. Something as simple as varying the heights of your arrangements makes a big difference in the overall look. Also, never underestimate the impact of your linens, chairs, and place settings. Choose these carefully so they match your wedding colors, concept, and style.
Here are some more ways to wow your guests:
  • For a romantic effect, decorate your tables with candles of all shapes and sizes—from tea lights and low votives to thick pillars and tall taper candles.
  • Have your lighting pro illuminate your tables with pinspots (tiny beams of light) or washes (soft, unfocused lights that can add color to each table).
  • Be bold with your floral designs! Go for a monochromatic look with different flowers reflecting a single color scheme or group complimentary or contrasting colors together in a single arrangement.
  • Make a fresh statement by using grapes, pomegranates, lemons, apples, or pears in your floral centerpieces.
  • In lieu of flowers, use plants to decorate your tables. A topiary or potted plant, or a cluster of various types of greenery offers a whimsical vibe.
  • Accent your linen napkins with something special, such as a single orchid, rosebuds, mini calla lilies, a beautiful ribbon, or a sparkling napkin ring.

Oh he is delightful.....See how easy it is to give your event that extra little something.

Check out his website if you need more David in your life.

There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them.

Thanks, Sylvia Plath, for that quote...a woman after my own heart because there is simply no better way to de-stress in my opinion.  Finding ways to unwind is what keeps life light and it is so necessary for everyone but it is especially important for people who are currently planning a wedding.

Every couple who is planning has been there: Juggling the never ending to-do list, feeling your tension climb up to a terrifying level, and thinking that you’ll truly snap if just one more thing happens. When you reach this point you are operating in reactive mode and that is when you say soemthing you will regret or make a decision that bites you in the butt downt the line.
Even small weddings can provoke usually calm families to become emotional, anxious and tense. For almost any wedding there are lots of expectations and lots of people involved and with all that energy and emotions therer is bound to be a tornado of stree swept your way.  The best thing to do is take a moment to pause because that really is the only way to cut through the mess then do use one of these ideas to cut the stress without hurting your wallet during this very expensive time in your life.

1-Do Something You Loved Doing as a Kid

Just because you’re all grown up now doesn’t mean you can’t still partake in the simple joys of childhood. Turn off your cell phone, disconnect from the internet, and act like a kid again!
Ride a bike to the park. Start a pick-up kickball game with your family or friends. Go to the beach and bring along your favorite book. Make a snowman in the wintertime. The possibilities and your imagination are endless.

2-Volunteer Your Time or Expertise

One of the best feelings in the world is giving back to others.  Volunteering can be something small and no matter what you do, you can be content to know that you’ve made a difference in someone’s life.

3-Stretch, Breathe and Meditate

Before you go into meltdown mode, hit pause, relax and take a breather.
Yoga is a great thing for some , but even some basic meditation, stretching and breathing techniques can work wonders for your stress relief. When you stress out, tension is stored in your body, causing pain and tightness, especially in your back and shoulders. Stretching will get your body loose and your circulation flowing in full force again.

4-Laugh

It’s been scientifically proven that laughter is both preventive and therapeutic. It decreases your stress hormone levels and boosts healthy hormones, like endorphins, while strengthening your immune system. You even get a mini workout for your abs, diaphragm and your shoulders!
Laughter really is the best medicine, so call up your funniest friend and hang out. You can also rent your favorite comedy or watch re-runs of a funny show together. You’ll be glad you did.

5-Sleep

Nothing beats a good night’s rest but sometimes that's not even enough.  At stressful times getting even 30 minutes of shut eye can help you relax and put your problems in perspective.
If you’re going to try to sleep off your stress, make sure you’ve got surroundings that promote good quality rest. A dark, cool, quiet room with few electronics is best. If you still feel too antsy to rest, try a cup of Valerian Root or chamomile tea. A warm bath can also help put you in a restful state of mind.

6-Get in Touch with your Creative Side

Looking at art definitely has its calming effects, but it’s not always all about the finished product. People who make art as a hobby find that the process of self-expression through unwinding and creating art can be extremely soothing as well.
Artistic self-expression helps lessen anxiety, stress and depression, and promote self-awareness, self-esteem and insight into your life. You can pick up reasonably priced art supplies or art kits at any hobby store. Just set aside an art space, turn on some relaxing music and paint to your health!

7-Cook a Delicious Homemade Dinner

Back up, slow down and consider taking the time to cook your next meal with simple items you already have in your fridge and cupboards.  The process of chopping, measuring, stirring and sautéing and even washing the dishes afterward can be incredibly therapeutic.

8-Get Outdoors, Go to the Park, Take a Hike

Stop and smell the flowers!  Science has proven time and time again how the psychological benefits of nature can calm the brain and better your mood and concentration.
So get back to basics, and enjoy nature. Bring a blanket to the park and lie out, or go for a hike and take in the scenery. Bask in the sun, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate all the colorful simplicity of the outdoors. Your brain’s health depends on it.

9-Take a Bath with Candles and Aromatherapy

Submerging in a bath tub relieves your body from the constant pull of gravity, and heated water relaxes muscle tension, improving circulation, range of motion and energy flow.
Melt away your stress by creating a mini spa in your bathroom. Turn on soothing music, dim the lights, light candles and prepare fresh towels. The music will drown out household sounds that you may associate with everyday stressors, and relaxed lighting can go a long way when creating a peaceful mood.
Most importantly, make arrangements for your well-deserved uninterrupted solitude. Be sure to prepare your bed beforehand so you have a nice, comfy space to crawl into after your bath.

Now go and unwind and enjoy the planning process because it only happens once :)

Spring Time in Paris....Oh La La

It's that time of year again for the annual Philadelphia Flower Show and really is there any better way to bring in Spring?  I think not.

The 2011 show theme is Springtime in Paris and I am already swooning over what I imagine I will see.  How hopelessly romantic...I am anticipating beautiful displays and I will probably want to move to Paris soon after.  I will report on all my findings on Friday.  This is also an amazing opportunity to get inspired for an upcoming wedding or any other gala you may have.  The flower show will spark your creative juices and it will surely implant a smile on your face and in your heart. The show opened on March 6 and is only running until March 13, 2011.  The tickets are priced as follows:

Adult: $25
Student: $20
Child: $15

Here is what a visitor can expect to see according to the Examiner.com.....
Springtime in Paris has been designed to transport the visitor from the City of Brotherly Love to the City of Lights.

This year’s flower show will feature displays of:
  • An opulent Paris during the time of Victorian glamour,
  • A romantic Paris with tete-a-tete down the Seine,
  • The gourmet Paris with rooftop and edible gardens,
  • The artist’s Paris where beautiful portraits and landscapes are created,
  • The avant-garde underground Paris with its catacombs, and
  • A timeless Paris of courtyards and cafes will all combine to form a Parisian paradise in flowers and plants.
The Paris in the Pennsylvania Civic Center will greet the guests with a bucolic park scene along the Seine River. The aroma of flowering trees, lilacs, roses and borders of lavender will lead the guests through gardens that have been inspired by the Tuileries all the way to the daring Moulin Rouge atmosphere where the cabaret performances will be conducted. Along the way there will be flower sculptures and carousel topiaries.
There will also be the usual items for sale, gardening workshops, cooking demonstrations, and wine tasting.

Merci Beaucoup.

Did You Know ? There are 45 Million Bubbles in a Bottle of Champagne!

Go out and celebrate the weekend with a spirit or two and while we are on the topic of drinks- lets discuss one of my favorite wedding additions to really customize your day.

A Signature Wedding Cocktail!

The easiest time to incorporate a signature cocktail into your wedding is during the cocktail hour of course. This is the party before the party and it would not be complete without COCKTAILS.  Also, it saves on cocktail hour costs by skipping the full bar and only offering your signature cocktail, plus beer and house wines.

Custom cocktails have become such a popular way to personalize a wedding. They are so much fun to put together as well. Sit down with you partner and think about your favorite drinks. This should not be a chore.... it is a chance to experiment...just get some ingredients with your partner and start playing around, there are much worse ways to spend a Friday night after all! Remember to jointly celebrate your likes and don’t stress out about pleasing anyone in particular. Then just modify it or rename it for your wedding.  If it’s a martini, it could be as simple as adding the suffix “tini” to your last name and viola it is renamed.   If in doubt, ask a mixologist or bartender friend to help you create a specialty cocktail.

Helpful Tips:
  • Consider serving a virgin twist on your specialty cocktail for those guests who don’t drink alcohol.
  • Keep in mind the color scheme of your wedding and the color of the drink.
  • Garnish your cocktail with a flower for a beautiful floral touch to your commemorative cocktail.
  • Once you have a signature drink you can keep the recipe and recreate the moment on every wedding anniversary.
  •  And Have Fun!

Giving the Gift.

With each invitation that comes our way we know that an impending gift will have to go along with it and I don't know about you but that is quite exciting for me...I love browsing gift registries to pass some time.  The problem that comes up time and time again is that with the usual wedding registry store suspects the gifts tend to repeat themselves because honestly there is just not that much selection at these stores.  This is why I LOVE the idea of a one stop shop registry site and my favorite one is MyRegistry.com.

Browsing a registry on this site is just so much fun.  The couple can add items from any website or store and each gift is so unique to the couple. The whole process feels much more personal and you can tell how much careful consideration was put into each selection...each gift is shouting "pick me"

This site has so many awesome features as well.  Its free to sign up for an account and if you already made a registry with Lenox, Macys, or Target, you can sync them this website.  You can also download an app for an iphone or android phone where you can scan the bar code of any product ANYWHERE and directly add it to your registry right there on the SPOT!  I just love that idea of not being limited to the products that one particular store has to offer.

Link for the App - http://www.myregistry.com/androidapp/

This website is so user friendly as well.  Visitors do not have to sign in they just need your name and off they go.  They scroll through the choices and next to each item is the cost and where to purchase the merchandise.  If you find an item you like simply click it and you will be directed to the stores website where you can buy it right there.  Immediately above the site a pop up window shows up from myregistry.com and it asks if you purchased the item or were you just looking.  If you select yes then the item gets crossed off the list.  You can even purchase the item at the store then visit the site to check it off the exact same way.

Read more about them on their facebook

Merry Gift Giving :)

Marching On...

There is nothing like the promise of what a brand new month may hold.  I have mini celebrations for each 1st of the month and I shall continue to do so for all the rest of my days, so Happy March 1st everyone. :)

Now moving on to a wedding related topic.  Wedding Websites...the debate lives on.  Some brides cringe when the mere mention of a wedding website is brought up and that feeling is quite understandable.  Some wedding websites induce nothing but eye rolls and head shakes with all of the over the top egocentric material spewed from the couple. BUT not all wedding websites have to walk down that path.

In fact most wedding websites are actually really helpful and they keep guests up to date on what to expect for the big day.  The secret to a great wedding website is to keep it simple. Include information that is actually useful such as the dates, times and travel information for all wedding related events. Couples can also save money by directing the guests to the website on their invitations instead of purchasing additional forms to include all of the travel details.  The couple can add a map of where each part of the day will take place on the website, they can also add where they are registered, and they can even start discussions to bring the guests together.  An idea that is quite popular on wedding websites is a specific song requests page or a section that enables guests to find each other on facebook so everyone can mix and mingle before the big day.

Finally the BEST function of a wedding website is that they provide an option for online RSVP's. This always ends up being the easiest way to make sure ALL of your guests respond in the least evasive way.

At the end of the day your guests do not need an essay sharing all of the teeny tiny details on how the couple met, got engaged, etc.  All they need is the key information so they will be prepared for your special day and it will save the couple from having to repeat the same information over and over again to each individual guest who has questions about the upcoming wedding.  In the long run it saves time, money, and acts as a platform for your guests to interact and bond over your upcoming wedding.
For those couples who want to give a wedding website a try I included some links for free wedding websites:
